TMJD is a term that can encompass a variety of symptoms including, but not limited to:

- Difficulty or painful chewing
- Restricted jaw movement
- Locking of the jaw
- Facial and or neck pain (with or without radiation)
- Jaw pain
- Frequent ear aches
- Changes in the way your upper and lower teeth fit together
Jaw pain is often a result of TMJD (Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction). The jaw is composed of intricate joints located just in front of each ear, and connects with several cranial structures, including the top spinal bones in your neck. This hinge-like joint allows the lower jaw to open, close, rotate and glide. The top row of your teeth also act as the top hinge as your skull rocks up and down on top of the vertebrae in your neck. You use this joint over 5,000 times each day when you chew, yawn, swallow, talk, laugh, eat and smile. It is also an area that can become tense or stressed, especially when your alignment is off.
One of the primary causes of jaw pain is due to a problem in the joint itself. An accident or injury in the past may have moved something out of alignment either in the top of your neck or in the temporo-mandibular joint itself, leading to joint pain and dysfunction. Even indirect trauma such as prolonged nail biting, teeth grinding, sports injuries and dental work have been known to trigger TMJ pain and disorders.
Often the most overlooked area is the top of the neck, or upper cervical spine, which has an intricate relationship with the structures of the jaw. Over time, normal wear and tear on a mal-adapted joint can lead to inflammation, irritation and joint degeneration, which can all lead to symptoms of TMJD. If you think you have pain related to TMJD let our doctor know so he can help you with a lasting correction and relief today!
